ALAN WHALLEY'S WORLD

THERE'S been a terrific explosion of response to my article headlined 'A Forgotten Hero.'

As I write, the mail continues to pour in and I intend to hold fire until all information is gathered together. Then I'll give it a well-merited full blast on this old page.

It all began when octogenarian Gus Atkins from Haresfinch, asked if anyone could recall the name of a St Helens bomb disposal hero who defused a massive wartime bomb at St Paul's Cathedral. But for this gallant action, that premier national monument would have been blasted out of existence.

Response came thick and fast and it transpires that there was, in fact, more than one bomb disposal hero from St Helens.

Keep tuned for further developments...
