TELEGRAMS from the Queen and Social Security Secretary minister Harriet Harman greeted Florrie Medlock on her 100th birthday.
Rossendale born and bred, Mrs Medlock received flowers and congratulations from family and friends as she welcomed them to a special open day at her home, The Grange Nursing Home, in Newchurch-in-Rossendale.
Mrs Medlock, a mother of two, attended Longholme Day School, Rawtenstall before becoming one of the first pupils at the former Alder Grange Secondary Modern School.
She went to work at the age of 13 in the footwear industry, employed at Ilex Mill, Rawtenstall, until her marriage. She was for many years a member of the Electrical Women's Association in Rawtenstall.
Her son, Jack, 75, said his mother was in good health and still had vivid memories of the early days of the century.
