WITH regards the article in The Journal on June 26 'Bloomin Blow'. I have recently returned from a holiday in the Black Forest region of Germany - my seventh visit in fact, where vandalism such as we experience in Leigh is practically unknown.

What sheer delight to see troughs of flowers hanging over the railings of bridges crossing their un-polluted rivers, standard roses and fuchsias untouched in their containers on the periphery of most market squares.

To my mind, there is very little point in expecting town traders to provide such delightful contributions or the Metro to clean up after wrecking sprees by these morons - because in general, people accept this vandalism, and until all our attitudes alter enough to report to the police any action seen - then we must all accept failure to keep our town clean and respectable.

May I finally give an indication of the difference in the attitude between ourselves and the people of the Black Forest region.

During my holiday I was walking the streets of a beautiful in mid-Black Forest called Freudunstadt - when to my utter amazement - a shopkeeper dashed out of his shop in front of me and picked up a piece of paper (the only piece of paper anywhere in sight) and took it back in to his shop.

No, I am not defeatist, but I can't help a pessimistic attitude when I see our definitely dirty town.
