LAST Saturday (July 12) saw Leyland achieve their first win for two years, when they beat previously unbeaten Morecambe by four wickets at Woodhill Lane.

Morecambe batted first after being put in by Leyland captain and professional, Paul Tebay and lost their first wicket at 19, when Graham Fisher was caught by David (Swampy) Tomlinson off Paul Haydock for six.

Twelve runs later Mark Woodhead was caught by Tomlinson off Lee (Jiggers) Jackson for twelve.

Morecambe's South African professional Steven Pope and Phil Moffat redressed the balance by adding 36 runs for the third wicket before the latter was bowled by Jackson for ten, leaving Morecambe 67 for 3.

Pope was next out with the score on 90 for four.

He was caught by Craig Gardner off Jackson for 44.

Half the Morecambe team were dismissed for 95 when Sam McKenzie was trapped lbw by Jackson for eight.

Nine runs later Phil Thornton was caught by Neil Kenyon off Paul Tebay for one.

The Leyland bowlers took control and Neil Jordan was trapped lbw by Tebay for 13, leaving Morecambe 125 for 7.

Seven runs later Morecambe wicket keeper, Damian Gudgeon was caught by Jackson to become Tebay's third victim for 23.

Morecambe's ninth wicket fell at 137 when Farouk Patel was bowled by Jackson for four. John Eccles was last out one run later, being run out for four.

"Jiggers" Jackson was the pick of the Leyland bowling attack, bowling 23 consecutive overs and taking 5 for 53. He was assisted by Paul Tebay who took 3 for 42 from 12.2 overs.

Leyland got the required runs for victory in the 38th over - but made a disastrous start in reply, losing opening batsman Craig Gardner without scoring.

Chris Sim and Paul Tebay added 27 runs for the second wicket before the former was trapped lbw by Patel for nine.

Tebay and Neil Kenyon took the score onto 58 before Kenyon was caught for 17.

One run later Leyland were 59 for four when Tebay was caught by Graham Fisher for 25.

Lee Heyes and Mark Pallett then put Leyland in to a commanding position, adding 56 runs for the fifth wicket before the former was caught and bowled by Morecambe's second change bowler Neil Jordan for 20.

Ironically, Mark Pallett was dismissed at the same total of 115 caught by Stephens for 33.

Fortunately, Leyland's David Tomlinson who hit the winning run and Nick Gore with an unbroken 26 runs partnership saw Leyland home to victory without the loss of any further wickets.

Tomlinson was undefeated with 15, and Gore with two.
