FEAR of burglary was the biggest crime worry for residents in the central areas of Burnley, according to a council survey.

More than 80 per cent of those asked were either fairly or very worried about being burgled and those who were most concerned called for more community police to tackle crime in their district.

The survey, commissioned by the council, using Challenge Fund cash, involved interviews with more than 700 people who were asked a wide range of questions on ways of creating a better Burnley.

Second in the league table of crime worries was fear of being mugged, robbed or beaten up, with 60 per cent of respondents expressing great concern and most calling for action against drugs as their crime-busting priority.

Car crime was the next greatest concern, with fear of being sexually assaulted or harassed in fifth place.

Respondents also identified neighbour problems, racial harassment and having cycles stolen as lesser concerns.

The results reveal 60 per cent of respondents were fairly or very concerned about being robbed, mugged or beaten up.
