Further to the letter in the Citizen (July 11), about abolishing cruel sport.

I am sure a lot of people would be surprised and horrified if they learned that traditional fox hunting kills around 20,000 foxes in the UK each year - also 6,000 brown hares and around 200 deer and hundreds of mink.

Why can't they switch to drag hunting, where hounds and horses follow a scented trail left by a rider or runner?

That way no hounds need to be destroyed unnecessarily, no horses need to be sold off, no jobs need to be lost and the traditions can live on.

In my view, hunting with dogs is just gratuitous cruelty.
