BURY'S Buckingham Bingo Club looks set to relocate within the next twelve months.

But rumours that the club was to close completely have been scotched by bosses.

Enquiries are being made in a bid to find a more suitable site for the club which is currently based in the former Art Cinema, a listed building in Haymarket Street.

A modern 20-25,000 sq ft site is sought with a level floor and car parking.

Cambos Enterprises Limited own the club and are looking at a range of alternative uses for it. Possibilities include food and drink uses or for the building to be opened as a live music venue.

Development director Mr John Anderson said: "We are trying to find alternative, more modern premises and are examining all possibilities for a new site

"But we have no formal agreement to do anything and the club will certainly not be closing in the near future.

"There are various plans afoot around Bury to provide leisure and entertainment and we are talking to everyone and anyone about the possibility of moving.

"The problem will be what to do with the Art building itself. We are seeking planning permission for various alternative uses.

"We do not know if the building will be used by us or someone else but are exploring all possibilities and all uses for the site.

"One thing we don't want is for the building to stand and degenerate.

"Space is tight on the current site and we have a car parking problem. But we are looking at a transfer rather than closure."

Mr Anderson added: "Bingo is safe at the Art building for the time being. The place is busy and trading very well and we obviously want to carry on trading."
