FOUR firefighter cadets from Rossendale are going to a European summer camp in Croatia, thanks to Rossendale Lions.

They stepped in with a cheque for £800 to pay for the flights after earlier plans for funding hit snags.

The cost of the camp is being met by the Croatian government.

Twenty cadets from across Britain are going on the trip after the success of Operation Florian, in which the fire service helped in the massive operation to rebuild the war-ravaged country.

Hayley Doody, Sarah Doherty, Stacey Raby and Peter Whitworth will be accompanied by Firefighter Albert Gooding.

The four were chosen by a democratic process from the dozen cadets who meet at Bacup fire station.

Each had to write a letter saying why they should be selected for the trip. Without knowing which letter had been written by which colleague, the cadets voted and the top four chosen.

The party will travel to RAF Manston on Friday, August 15, and fly from Gatwick the following Monday, returning August 28.
