JUBILATION followed tragedy for Bury mum Danielle Nadler when she helped Great Britain lift the gold medal during the recent Jewish Olympics.

Following the death of two Australian athletes when a bridge collapsed during the opening ceremony of the Maccabiah Games in Israel, Mrs Nadler of Allendale Drive, went on to clinch the Olympic Gold with the Greater Britain team which beat the Aussies 56/55 in the final match of the Netball section.

A runner-up in the same Olympic tournament four years ago, finishing third and claiming the bronze medal, Mrs Nadler helped overcome a five point deficit this time to lift the title.

"I received a bronze medal last time but I knew I would take a gold medal home with me this year," said the mother of three.

"I was absolutely ecstatic about it. The team's success is still sinking in."

The wing defender will soon be busy preparing for the European championships in 1999 and will continue to play for the Jewish Maccibi netball team in the Manchester League.

However, the tragedy of this year's Maccabiah Games will remain with the 34-year-old. "The British team were still in a holding area as the members of the Australian team crossed the bridge.

"I didn't see it collapse but everyone was affected by it. It was only later that we discovered two of the Australian team had died in the incident. I was in total shock. The games should have commenced the day after the opening ceremony but because of the accident, it was put back one day and a memorial service was held to honour the dead.

"It was a moving ceremony attended by athletes from all the countries."
