TRADERS are digging deep to keep crime at bay. And Atherton Traders' Association spokesman Cllr Mrs Sue Loudon is delighted with retailers' response to request for spy camera support.

She said:"We have had different scales of support according to the type of business.

"We have had pledges of between £100 and £500 from many businesses, but any amount is welcomed."

Traders need to raise £36,000 towards the cost of installing CCTV cameras in the town.

The project will cost a total of £144,000 - half funded by the Government and the remaining cost shared by traders and Wigan Council.

On Tuesday traders met at The Wheatsheaf to discuss future strategy for improving the town centre. Ideas include presenting a brighter outlook with shop front flower displays to help attract more visitors to help realise the town's potential.
