GED Furey equalled his own course record five-under-par 66 - which he set in the opening round - to take a three-shot lead into the third and final round of the De Vere Hotels PGA North Region Championship at Heron's Reach, Blackpool.

The Pleasington professional and former PGA Cup player, who won this event in 1995 at Mottram Hall, has only one serious challenger, Ringway assistant David Brunton.

"I've had trouble on the greens all year but I had only 22 putts today which was my best return of the season," said Furey, who collected four birdies, two in each half, and an eagle at the 11th where he holed his sand wedge approach from 80 yards.

His 66 was matched by Burnley's Paul Carman, playing his best round of the season. But it followed an opening round of 74, three over par.

Defending champion Simon Townend of Wilpshire and Clitheroe's Simon Eaton both missed the cut. Jeff Mathews of Blackburn Driving Range and Clitheroe's John Twissell lie on three over par and four over respectively.
