I HAVE been reading about a shoe shop in Clayton-le-Moors to which parents go from as far as Sheffield, Clitheroe, Burnley and Preston to pay £50 for a pair of shoes for children aged from 12 months to 12 years.
According to the assistant, these shoes last between three and six months and 600 pairs have been sold in the past six months.
At the risk of being accused of dealing in the 'politics of envy,' may I say that it says a lot about today's society when parents can afford these prices while millions of pensioners, myself included, receive a weekly retirement pension of £37.35?
I do not blame the present government for this state of affairs, but what, if anything, is it going to do to rectify this situation?
Recent research by Age Concern stated that, to live adequately, every pensioner needs £125 a week.
