A GRANDMOTHER is hoping Citizen readers can help her track down an heroic duo who carried her to safety when she broke an ankle on a trip to Darwen Tower.

Beryl Bickerstaffe, who had travelled from Nottingham to visit friends, is appealing to Citizen readers to identify the knights in shining armour who came to her aid after a nasty fall.

Mrs Bickerstaffe, of Toton, was sightseeing at Darwen Tower when her stick slipped on loose gravel and she was sent crashing to the floor, breaking her ankle.

Luckily for grandmother-of-two Beryl, 68, and her husband Roy, 70, a passer by came to their rescue. The mystery man linked hands with Mr Bickerstaffe in order to make a chair for Beryl and carry her down the hill.

The couple's friend, Patricia Berry, of Rydale Avenue, drove to the nearby Sniddle Hill Farm to alert the residents and a man dashed from the farm to lend his assistance. He took over from Mr Bickerstaffe and carried Beryl the rest of the distance down the hill, where she could be rushed to the hospital.

Mrs Bickerstaffe, who broke her ankle in two places, said she was still in great pain. But she added: "I would like to find the two men who went out of their way to show such kindness. I hope Citizen readers can help me.

"I remember thanking them at the time, but everything was happening in a blur. Now I am on the road to recovery I would like to express my gratitude to the men. It was a lovely gesture."

She even went to the trouble of placing a thankyou ad in the personal column of the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

Mr and Mrs Bickerstaffe are returning to Nottingham this week but anyone who knows the identity of her heroes can call the Citizen newsdesk on 671241.
