A WORRIED mum is campaigning for traffic calming measures on a danger road - claiming a child will be killed before long if nothing is done.

Lorraine Mason began her protest last week after her nine-year-old son Lewis was knocked down as he walked along Albert Road, Leyland.

Lewis's accident on Tuesday night (August 12) came not long after his younger brother Jack, seven, was also involved in an accident on the same stretch of road near an unfenced children's play area.

Lorraine said: "There's been a lot of accidents. It is only a matter of time before a child is killed.

"Drivers are flying down the road - they just use it as a rat run. There are so many children near where we live.

"Only six years ago a boy had both his legs crushed in an accident on the road."

Farington County Primary School pupil Lewis was left with bruises and grazes all over his body and his back will be scarred for life because of the accident.

His mum's campaign has received the backing of South Ribble MP David Borrow who was presented with a petition signed by hundreds of residents - which also calls for a safety fence around the child's play area.

Mr Borrow, who has now promised to write a letter and send the petition to South Ribble council, said: "The main problem is that you have a play area for children right next to the road with no barriers to stop the children running down the hill into the road."

Mr Borrow said he would be asking for statistics of problems in that area and make sure it is given proper consideration by the authorities.
