YOUNGSTERS were well on track when they took part in an action packed day of athletics thanks to Preston council.

Children from all over town turned up to compete in track and field events organised by the borough's sports development team at London Road athletics track on Monday (August 18).

And they got a special treat when Preston's own Great Britain international runner Helen Pattinson turned up to hand out the medals.

The day was the culmination of weeks of sessions aimed at getting youngsters involved in athletics and then, if they wish, inviting them to join clubs to carry on with the sport.

Cross country and 1,500m runner Helen, from Whittingham, said: "I joined Preston Harriers when I was 11 and started out taking part in general multi-events like this.

"It's good to have a go at everything. If you've got potential it's the only way of finding out. It's also about getting kids involved and enjoying athletics."

Sports Development Officer Amanda Wrigley said: "These children will get details of clubs and encouraged to join them if they want to.

"We're encouraging proper coaching and instruction rather than the casual just have-a-go attitude." Despite the sweltering heat the day went well. Eight-year-old Rachel Carroll, from Lea, said: "It's been really good fun, I especially liked doing the hurdles. I'd really like to be an athlete."

Michael Wainwright, nine, said: "I like athletics better than most sports." The exercise was part of programmes organised by the sports development team. For information call 704002.
