Accrington Stanley today launched the search for a new manager after the shock sacking of Tony Greenwood, writes TONY DEWHURST.

Stanley made the decision to part company with Greenwood after a Crown Ground board meeting and he was informed of the decision last night.

Greenwood landed the Stanley job only a year ago after the departure of Stan Allan.

But Saturday's FA Cup exit at the hands of Leigh and four straight defeats proved too much for the Stanley board.

"I had no inclination that this was coming and it is a total and utter shock," said Greenwood.

"The chairman came to see me in Preston and asked me to resign.

"I said to him there is no way I am resigning.

"The chairman just said I have, therefore, no option but to sack you.

"The news has not really hit home yet and I am pretty devastated."

Chairman Eric Whalley explained the reasons behind Stanley's decision. He said: "We just felt the decision was in the best interests of Accrington Stanley at this point of time.

"The receipts through the gate for the fixture against Colwyn Bay on Tuesday were some of the smallest I can ever remember during my time associated with the club.

"We felt, therefore, that a change of management was needed to try and kick-start the season into life and to help Accrington to progress further.

"It is not just about recent results, there are other factors as well.

"There is nobody more sorry than me that this appointment has not worked out but these things happen in football.

"But we are in a bit of a hole at present and we need to dig our way out of it."

Jim McCluskey will be caretaker manager for tomorrow's home game against Guiseley and the midweek league fixture at Leigh. Whalley added that no new appointment was imminent.

"Nobody is favourite for the job and we are keeping an open mind," added the chairman.
