DEALING with 100 family debts totalling £1million has left a money advice service strapped for cash.

Blackburn Citizens' Advice Bureau's specialist money advice service is currently assisting 100 multiple debt clients, many under threat of losing their homes. But the workload has left the CAB itself in financial difficulties.

Money Advice Support Worker Liz Royle: "The service is desperately in need of funding in order to increase the amount of help it offers.

"At present, the 100 caseload maximum has been reached and further money is needed from the private or public sector, such as banks and businesses, in order to continue taking on new clients and enhancing the service."

Debts which the service is helping to settle include mail order, bank loans, credit cards, rent arrears, council tax, fuel and water rates bills. People are often referred to the Citizens' Advice Bureau by their creditors or the courts for professional advice and assistance it offers.

Liz Royle added: "We also provide a service at the county court for people fighting mortgage repossessions.

"This can mean the difference between somebody agreeing reasonable repayments on their mortgage arrears or losing their home.

"Debt puts an immense strain on families and, as well as giving practical help, we try to relieve some of the emotional pressure and provide support to our clients."

Potential funders and anyone interested in voluntary clerical support work should contact Liz at the bureau.
