EURO-MP Mike Hindley was today claiming victory after the European Labour Party lifted the threat of suspension against him.

The Lancashire South MEP and three others had earlier been told they were being thrown out for refusing to accept a code of practice banning any statements to the media about the party's selection plans for the next Euro elections.

However, the Euro Labour group voted overwhelmingly last night on a compromise which said they could discuss any issue, although it stated that the "appropriate place" for discussions is inside the party.

The MEPs, dubbed "The Strasbourg Four", had refused to sign the code of practice and had claimed it was a device to censor discussion.

They also claimed it was imposed by the leadership to silence left wing criticism of the party under Tony Blair.

Mr Hindley said today: "It's a complete and utter vindication of our position. The original expulsion has been expunged from the record and I've signed absolutely nothing.

"There is now a memorandum of understanding which clarifies the code of practice and it says that MEPs canot face disciplinary action for expressing their views."

The Great Harwood-based MEP said he was "very sorry" about the original suspension but believed the matter was now closed.
