A SMALL school can be special and we have exam results to prove it! That was the message from principal Muriel Ashcroft at the prize-giving of Moorland School in Clitheroe.

"Our 1997 GCSE results were indeed excellent, with an 88 per cent pass rate. Our's is the best small school in Lancashire and the envy of neighbouring schools," she told the gathering.

"This truly reflects the hard work of pupils and the dedicated teaching of our staff. Moorland is very fortunate in having such professionals, whose commitment ensures the best possible success for pupils," she continued.

She said Moorland School provided pupils with a foundation for the future in a "caring, well-disciplined and happy atmosphere, where traditional values are a priority for a complete education."

"We are committed to the provision of a supportive environment which encourages the pursuit of excellence and nurtures growth on all fronts; intellectual, physical, spiritual, moral, cultural and social.

"Our staff wish to see pupils enjoy clear standards, caring attitudes and an open-minded outlook," she said.

She praised the pupils for raising £1,263 for the SuperScan Appeal, the largest single amount raised by any school.

The event was attended by pupils past and present and parents.

The guest speaker was Professor Chris Carr, principal of the University College of St Martin in Lancaster.
