RISING snooker star Lynette Horsburgh almost pulled off the shock of the season, coming close to beating the world number one at Preston's Guild Hall.

The 23-year-old, who has just completed a Law and Accountancy degree at the University of Central Lancashire, was narrowly defeated 4-3 by Karen Corr in a tense Ladies UK Championship final on Sunday.

And Lynette, from Blackpool, will be back in town next week when she returns to university to pick up her honours.

The match was televised and played on the same table as the men's final. Lynette said: "It was a great thrill to compete at the Guild Hall, especially as I will be back here soon to receive my degree.

"There was a lot of pressure out there. The public think the pockets are big, but they are so tight it's amazing how the men make so many centuries."
