A LANCASTER woman died in a major crash on the M6 south of the city on Wednesday morning. Eyewitnesses say the woman, who has not been named, left her car at the scene of the accident only to be hit by an oncoming vehicle. At least four other people were taken to Preston Royal Hospital with serious injuries.

Now police are trying to track down the driver of a lorry which may have been involved in the initial collision.

The motorway between Junctions 33 and 32 had to be closed down for during the morning rush hour as a result of the pile-up which involved a heavy goods vehicle and at least five cars.

Paul Crane of Lancaster Ambulance Service said: "We were called out at about 6.30 but the woman was already deceased when we arrived."

The motorway was closed for hours while emergency services cleared up the wreckage and severe delays were caused until the afternoon.

The lorry driver the police want to talk to was driving a yellow coloured, medium-sized, open-backed goods vehicle with IMP (or similar) written on the tailgate.
