STRONG winds and heavy storms struck the North West again this week wreaking more havoc.

Preston train station suffered again as part of the roof was almost blown off. The main entrance off Butler Street had to be closed and four platforms were shut down for safety reasons causing many trains to be delayed.

Police cordoned off the car park which led to heavy traffic queues in Fishergate.

PC Neil Rawsthorne, of British Transport Police, said: "It was a big hazard to the public. Although the winds have died down, the roof is still dangerous and we have to wait until it's completely safe to send workers up to fix it."

The station opened fully on Monday evening (January 5) but repair work is still needed. An unfortunate Lostock Hall farmer was among the victims who fell foul of the bad weather. The wind ripped the roof from his pigeon shed and his caravan was whisked up to land in the middle of a field.
