SPRIGHTLY octogenarian Florence Windle is one of the oldest faces at Surikha House in Darwen - but she's not a resident.

In fact the residents love the fiesty volunteer so much they treated her to a surprise party to mark her 80th birthday.

Florence, who was matron at Surikha House for 13 years until 1992, has volunteered her services as an entertainer and administration assistant for the past five years.

Before joining Surikha House, she worked as a nurse at Belgrave Mill in Darwen, until her retirement, aged 60.

Florence, who lives just around the corner from the Blackburn Road rest home, now splits her time between Surikha House and Blackburn Royal Infirmary.

Her boss, rest home owner Diane Zaman, called Florence "one in a million."

She said: "She is a very bright, energetic lady who loves working and helping others.

"She was thrilled with the surprise birthday party and loved all the cards and flowers."
