RESIDENTS in Clitheroe town centre are getting into gear over a plan to stop motorists parking in their streets.

They are fighting to clear their streets of cars left by motorists dodging charges on nearby car parks. Ribble Valley councillors recently voted to back a proposed ban on parking in 12 town centre streets.

The scheme, if it gets off the ground, will see residents paying from £20 to £100 a year for exclusive parking rights in their street.

But it will only get the go-ahead if it receives 'substantial support' from the residents, who are now being consulted via a questionnaire.

Resident Derek Pearson said the residents were reacting favourably to the proposed scheme.

"I have spoken to a few who are willing to pay for residents-only parking, depending on how much. It's a matter of getting everyone to agree, but the scheme in principle is being viewed favourably," he said.

If the scheme receives substantial support from the residents, it could be up and running by August, a council spokesman said.
