RAIL users can look forward to better, more efficient train services on the Fylde thanks to the development of a regional rail strategy.

The plan, which has taken two years to formulate, recommends putting in a new passing loop between Kirkham and Blackpool South as well as creating a new station at Cottam.

There are also recommendations for the introduction of a Fleetwood-Cleveleys-Thornton-Preston bus link.

In addition, investigations have been carried out into the feasibility of introducing a Light Rail Transport system on the Fylde.

The total cost of these improvements is estimated at around £4.5 million.

County Councillor Frank McKenna, chairman of the North West Partnership which commissioned the strategy, said: "This study, the first in the UK to look at a region's entire rail network, is a key element in delivering a co-ordinated, balanced transport strategy for the region.

"All the major regional interests, public and private have made contributions.

"It recommends the development of better quality and more frequent local trains, including an element of light rail as well as new connections to both Manchester and Liverpool Airports."

Paul Nettleton, chairman of the Blackpool and Fylde Railway Users Association, said: "We do welcome some of these suggestions.

"For a long time we have been pressing for a passing loop to improve the service on the Kirkham to Blackpool South line, it is nice to know we are not the only body which would like to see one.

"Every year thousands of people flood into Blackpool to go to the Pleasure Beach and see the attractions.

"If we create a good, efficient rail service, more of those visitors will come on the train."
