A LOCAL cycling star aims to steer to success after being called up to the National Under-23 Road Racing team.

Chris Burrows, 20, of Leach Lane, Sutton, is preparing himself for two weeks' training in Alicante, on Spain's Costa Blanca.

He will be part of national squad's training camp which starts at the end of February in preparation for a season of representative duty beginning in March.

The camp will consist of 10 men who will be coached for the fortnight by cycling superstar Rob Millar.

Chris said he was looking forward to having the guidance of the former King of the Mountains and hopes he will be in the six chosen for the national team come the start of the season. He said: "My chances are very good since I came eighth in the National Road Race last season. There is a squad of 10 so the team could vary during the season.

"I hope to break into the team as well as achieving my Elite licence before the end of the season."

The call-up to the camp, which is largely funded by the BCF, is the reward for a good season and a great deal of hard work but the young cyclist says he is keen to go on. Said Chris: "I am continuing with my training until I go to Alicante but obviously at a higher level than before."

Chris said he was looking forward to the season ahead but his ambition doesn't end there. He said of his long term goal: "I want to go on to race abroad in 1999."
