LOCAL voluntary and community groups have been given council community chest grants.

Nearly £48,000 has been shared by 100 organisations borough-wide.

And the Mayor of Wigan, Cllr Ken Pye presented cheques to some of the successful groups on Wednesday at a special ceremony in Lowton Civic Hall.

Groups which have benefited this year include Leigh Pensioners Voice, Tyldesley Thai Boxing Club and Hindley Youth Group.

Other local groups attending the ceremony are Morts Astley Heritage Group, Butts Bridge Environmental & Community Group, Leigh East Amateur Rugby League Football Club, the Red Rose Steam Society, and Wigan & Leigh D.I.A.L.

The fund was set up 11 years ago to help organisations expand their work and increase community involvement in a wide range of activities.

Deputy leader of Wigan council, cllr Tom Sherratt said: "Voluntary groups play a vital role within communities across the borough, improving the quality of life for many people.

"Their work and enthusiasm is appreciated by the council and is reflected in the range of projects assisted by the Community Chest.

"However, the funds are limited and the available money for this year was heavily oversubscribed.

"In fact so many worthwhile projects have been submitted means no more funding will be available until at least April."

The Mayor added: "Visiting all parts of the borough in the course of my duties, it has been a delight to see so many voluntary groups working in partnership with the council to bring real benefits to the community.

"Often it is the availability of these small grants which can provide a stimulus towards a new project and help local groups achieve their objectives.

"The council has great pleasure in being able to provide this financial assistance through the Community Chest fund."
