A COURAGEOUS Leyland schoolgirl determined to lead a normal life despite being born with only one normal limb, has received a prestigious prize.

Brave Lucy Freeman, of Birchwood, went on a trip of a lifetime this week to pick up a Child of Achievement award from a host of celebrities in London.

Despite her disabilities, the popular nine-year-old who uses two artificial limbs, has won a host of friends including the brownies in her St James' pack, and pupils and staff at Moss Side County Primary School.

Headteacher Janis Burdin nominated the plucky youngster for the award.

She said: "Lucy's a little love. She never says she can't do something or pulls her face.

"There are times when she's in discomfort but just gets on with it. She's so determined she puts the rest of us to shame sometimes."

Lucy was at the London Hilton Hotel on Wednesday (February 11) eagerly waiting to meet Gaby Roslin and other celebrities at the glitzy ceremony.

Speaking from her hotel room just before picking up her certificate and trophy, Lucy said: "I'm really excited, and I've had a great time."

And she spoke of the secrets of her achievements: "It's not been too hard.

"I've just had to be determined to do the things that others do easily."

Dad Ian also paid tribute to his daughter. He said: "It's been a tough time for her but she never gives up. I'm the proudest dad in the world."

Lucy plans to see some of the sights of London, including a trip to see Beauty and the Beast at the Dominican Theatre before coming home later today (Thursday February 12).

The annual Child of Achievement Awards are supported by The Philip and Pauline Harris Charitable Trust and this year just 150 were handed out.
