Haydock 6 Waterhead 16 IT was back to earth with a bump for Haydock after their heroics at Workington the previous week.

But even so they still produced a valiant effort against the North West Counties League Premier Division pace-setters,

Both sides scored a try apiece, but goal-kicking proved the difference between the sides.

The scene was set after five minutes when Waterhead took the lead with a penalty, but the Yickers equalised with a similar effort from Ireland.

However, Waterhead looked the more dangerous side as Haydock dropped too much ball.

And the Oldham side regained their lead with another penalty.

But Haydock grabbed the fist try of the game on 32 minutes. It came when Ireland received the ball 10 yards inside his own half. He kicked ahead and the Waterhead winger fumbled, allowing Frodsham to collect.

The former Saints man fed Lowe, who transferred to the supporting Ireland for a fine try.

But back came Waterhead and after a kick had been fumbled into touch, the Oldham outfit created a three-man overlap from the resulting scrum for a converted try.

Haydock failed to score point in the second half, but Waterhead added three penalty goals to their tally.

However, the Yickers should not be too disappointed with their effort in which Bradshaw, Lowe and Ireland were outstanding.
