BURNLEY are reaping the rewards of a successful run in the Auto Windscreens Shield and could bank up to half a million pounds if they reach the final at Wembly.

Their opening game against Notts County will have produced negligible receipts from a gate of just 2,442.

But since then the Clarets have drawn crowds of 4,573 and 10,079 for the visits of Carlisle and Preston respectively.

Even with reduced prices and a shared gate the Turf Moor coffers will have received a timely boost.

The second leg of the northern final against Grimsby Town on Tuesday, March 17 should generate another five figure attendance provided Chris Waddle's men are well placed following their trip to Blundell Park.

And the competition sponsors claim a successful run in the competition can bring in revenues as high as £500,000.

THE Clarets' win over Preston in the northern area semi-final of the Auto Windscreens Shield marked the return to Turf Moor of John Mullin.

Mullin has joined North End on loan from Sunderland and although he failed to score for the second game running, he impressed manager David Moyes. "He played very well for us on Tuesday and last Saturday and we are enjoying having him here," said Moyes.

"John would benefit from getting a goal and Ithink people here would see that he is a good player. I am sure that Burnley people know he was a good player before he left. John is doing well for Preston and I hope he will help us in our present situation."

CHRIS Waddle is planning to return to full training on Monday after injury has kept the player-boss out of contention in recent weeks.

Waddle had struggled with a foot injury and was then troubled with a groin problem which delayed any chance of a comeback.

However, he is confident that he is back on the road to fitness and should be back in the swing of things next week. In his absence Kevin Henderson has established himself in the first team squad but Burnley remain short of strength in depth up front.

TODAY'S visitors Brentford are one of only two teams in the Nationwide League without an away win to their credit.

Darlington share that dubious distinction but their 10 goals make the Bees the lowest scorers on their travels with a feeble seven.

BURNLEY'S Auto Windscreens Shield northern final first leg at Grimsby Town on Tuesday, March 10 means their Second Division game against Oldham Athletic will have to be re-arranged.
