AN EXPERIMENTAL roundabout isn't the answer to Astley road junction bedlam.

Chaotic Cross Hillock needs traffic signals say campaigners who don't accept a roundabout as a solution to snarl-up safety problems.

Local authority highways engineers came-up with a scheme to install a roundabout on Manchester Road, Astley to ease Higher Green Lane junction jams.

But safety campaigner and Astley GP Dr Bhola Nath Varma says:"I am afraid the proposed Straits roundabout does not solve the problem at all.

"After seeing the news in The Journal, lots of people came to see me and are of a unanimous opinion that traffic lights are the only solution for the safety of the community."

He says traffic turmoil is so bad pedestrians fear using a zebra crossing close to the junction.

He has highlighted the heavy rate of traffic flow to the East Lancs Road, motorways and Chaddock Lane industrial estate and has logged details of several recent accidents at the junction.

Hundreds of supporters have signed his traffic signals petition.

He said they viewed the roundabout experiment as a "total uneconomic expenditure of public money".
