A 12-MONTH-OLD baby has died from the most deadly form of meningitis.

Chloe Melissa Jackson, from Atherton, died on Sunday shortly after being admitted to the Royal Bolton Hospital.

She was taken there after her mother became concerned about a rash on Chloe's body.

Despite a medical team's efforts she died from the meningococcal septicaemia strain of meningitis.

Her mother became increasingly concerned about her daughter's rash after trying the widely publicised "glass test" - putting light pressure on the baby's skin.

A recent public awareness campaign has focused on the simple test and advises parents to use it if they are concerned. If the redness does not disappear when a glass is rolled over it then it is likely meningitis is present.

A spokesman for the public health department at Wigan and Bolton Health Authority confirmed the baby girl died from meningococcal septicaemia and "all appropriate public health action" has been taken.

In other cases this has involved protecting all close members of the family from the risk of infection.

The department stressed the case was a one-off, pointing out symptoms of meningococcal disease are those of meningitis - fever, vomiting or a purple rash.
