BURY College are resurrecting plans to develop their Peel Centre site.

The college have re-submitted plans to extend the centre and build a new access road off Market Street. But they say that does not mean any work will start in the foreseeable future.

They have applied for renewal of plans which caused an uproar with neighbouring residents when they were first mooted some years ago.

The college did get permission for the plans in 1995, but permission only lasts three years, and now they are asking for that to be extended.

Miss Stephanie Nixon, the college's press officer, said the college was just keeping its options open.

"Looking at the problems experienced by residents on Parliament Street and the surrounding roads, one idea we are keen to develop is the building of a new landscaped access area from Market Street where there are no houses," Miss Nixon explained.

"This would help local people by easing congestion on residential streets."

Bury Council will have to inform residents in the area about the application.

The college do want to concentrate on their town centre site in Bury, and have already closed the Whitefield centre on Albert Road, with facilities moved to the two Bury sites.

Ambitious plans for a "Supercampus", encompassing the Peel and Market Street Centres, together with a business park in Pyramid Park, failed when a funding bid under the Single Regeneration Budget failed.
