BUSINESSES and Rossendale Council are counting the cost of a spate of smashed windows in the borough over the weekend.

One of the targets was Whitworth swimming pool, where a 4ft square double glazed window costing £100 was smashed.

The British Queen pub, Union Street, Bacup, lost a 4ft square window worth £60 and a disused shop round the corner on Irwell Street, used as accommodation for the pub, had a £60 6ft x 2ft window put in.

A youth was seen punching in an 18in x 12in window at the pet shop on St James Street, Bacup.

And a youth believed to have been responsible for breaking a window at Bacup Travel Centre on Burnley Road ran off when he was seen by an employee.

The youth was 18, white, slim, about 5ft 6in tall with short, dark hair and was wearing dark clothing.

At Raj Upholstery on Bacup Road, Waterfoot, six windows valued at £300 were smashed. And a 6ft x 5ft window costing £250 was broken at Ethel Austin in the Valley Centre, Rawtenstall.
