A PRIMARY school teacher is hoping to become one of the first people in East Lancashire to be voted into a top union position.

Simon Jones of St James School, Blackburn, wants to become National Executive Member for the National Union of Teachers in Blackburn, Lancashire, Blackpool and the Isle of Man, giving the area a voice at a national level.

He is aiming to put workplace bullying at the top of his agenda. He says it occurs in Blackburn and Darwen schools.

Mr Jones said: "An increasing number of members are experiencing bullying, harassment and discrimination at work.

"That will not be tolerated and I will make bullying in the workplace my number one priority and try to ensure it is wiped out."

Mr Jones will also be addressing other issues he says face teachers, including heavy workloads and OFSTED inspections.

He added: "I am committed to protecting and supporting members.

"Confident, valued and professional teachers are the key to providing quality education opportunities for all children and the cornerstone of our state education system."

Mr Jones is currently secretary of the Blackburn and Darwen branch of the NUT.

He has been working in Blackburn since 1994 after moving from the London borough of Lambeth.

Mr Jones, who lives in Lancaster, is also Local Government Reorganisation Officer for the Lancashire Division, a representative on Lancashire's Teachers' Consultative Committee and a member of the North West Regional Council.

The result of the ballot is expected to be known on April 1.
