HOMEOWNERS are calling for lorries to be banned from a busy stretch of a Blackburn road.

People living in Shadsworth Road say their lives are made a misery by the constant stream of lorries using it as a short cut to the motorway.

A campaign was launched last year in a bid to ban the HGVs but the council promised the problem would ease once the M65 extension opened.

But a second petition has landed at the town hall signed by 175 people living in the area.

People claim their properties are being damaged by the vibrations from the non-stop stream of traffic.

They say cracks have appeared in buildings and pointing is missing from 75 per cent of properties. Before the M65 extension was opened a survey revealed 12,000 vehicles travelled along Shadsworth Road each day.

Most of the motorists used the road as a short cut between Whitebirk and Darwen and there was also heavy vehicles linked to the motorway works.

But highways officials say a lot of the heavy traffic still comes from businesses in Intack and Shadsworth.

Officers from the highways and transport department at Blackburn Town Hall say it is impossible to ban the lorries from the road.

Heavy traffic travelling to local businesses has a right to use roads in the area.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has promised to look at the problem and improve signs to the new section of the motorway.

The situation will be discussed at a highways and transportation committee on Wednesday.
