MY wife and I shop regularly in Clitheroe, and on occasions buy vegetables etc, from David Brass at 'Banana News', Clitheroe, the subject of your article (LET, March 4).
We have never experienced any problems with the display outside the shop, and the pavement is so wide that it is difficult to see how it can constitute an obstruction.
However, local bureaucracy is prone to have its way, and Mr Brass will undoubtedly be prosecuted if he does not move the display, if only to show other shopkeepers that the law must be obeyed, but here's a thought.
The pathways between the stalls (shops) in Clitheroe market are no wider than the pavement outside 'Banana News,' and are always partially obstructed, sometimes on both sides, by displays every week.
Will the council also insist that these are removed? If not, why? And if the answer is yes, then will it be the case for other markets?
