A TERRIFIED 86-year-old woman woke up to find a burglar standing by her bed.

Acting Detective Inspector Joe Kellet of Blackburn Police described the offence as "alarming" and asked anyone who might know the offender to come forward.

The pensioner was sleeping at her home in Clinton Street, Little Harwood, Blackburn, when she was disturbed at 2.15am yesterday.

Mr Kellet said: "The burglar was in the process of rooting through her jewellery box when she woke up.

"He fled from the house when he saw that she was awake."

The raider was white, in his early 20s, 5ft 4in tall and slim and was wearing a woollen hat and dark clothing.

A Sanyo video recorder worth £100 was taken.
