A NEW housing scheme, named in memory of a former councillor, has been officially opened at a cost of nearly £2 million.

The late Coun Allan Critchlow, a former mayor of Hyndburn and long standing Rishton councillor, has been honoured by the Eaves Brook Housing Association.

Allan Critchlow Way, was opened by the current Hyndburn mayor Coun Maurice Cowell who is pictured above presenting a ceremonial key to new tenant Mrs Sheila Calvert.

The development, with 35 family homes and a special needs home for the National Autistic Society, is built on the site of the former Unity Mill next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

It has cost £1.9 million and weekly rents will be £58.87 for a three-bedroom house and £54.15 for a two-bedroom. All the houses are let with half the tenants taken from the council's waiting list.
