LABOUR leaders in Burnley are celebrating the completion of a road safety scheme after years of campaigning for action.

The move comes after calls for footpath widening at an accident blackspot at Glen View Road.

In the past, motorists entering the road from Reynolds Street, could not see whether fast-moving traffic was about to come round the nearby bend.

There was a similar headache for pedestrians trying to cross Glen View at that point.

Burnley Council chiefs expressed concern but were unable to get the footpath widened, which would have solved the problem, in a county council road improvement programme.

At the last local council elections two years' ago, Coalclough ward Labour candidate Julie Humphrey made the issue a platform for her campaign.

This year's municipal contender John Ormerod continued to press Lancashire County Council for action and joined forces with local county councillor Tony Martin.

Today, after viewing the newly-completed work, Mr Ormerod said: "I am delighted it has been done.

"It is a triumph for co-operation between Burnley and county and will be of great benefit to drivers and pedestrians."
