A POET has put Pendle in the spotlight as a centre of creative Urdu writing after his latest work was the subject of a literary review in Manchester.
Leading Urdu writers, critics, journalists and diplomats joined an audience of more than 100 people from literary societies across the North West at a ceremony to launch Qari Abdul Aziz Azhar's latest volume of poems.
The event was organised by the Circle of Literary Friends and the book was reviewed by leading ethnic literature critic Ghulam Qadir Azad. It was chaired by Professor Afaq Ahmed of Bhopal University, an authority on Urdu literature who is touring Britain and Canada.
Pakistani Consul Hameed Warraich paid tribute to the author who lives in Smith Street, Nelson.
Circle chairman Mohammed Anwar said Mr Azhar's latest poetry collection put Lancashire and particularly Nelson in the spotlight.
He congratulated the people of Pendle for supporting Urdu literary heritage.
