EDUCATION bosses in Blackburn and Darwen have pledged to carry on handing out grants to further education students in the borough.

The recently formed Local Education Authority has made the promise at a time when other councils are cutting back on student grants.

County Hall leaders caused a political storm earlier this year when they decided to axe free public transport for college students.

But Blackburn with Darwen Council has committed itself to lifelong education in the borough.

And the commitment includes a promise to give grants to students in full-time education.

Students who meet the set conditions will get help with transport costs, maintenance and tuition fees.

Blackburn with Darwen's education and training chairman Bill Taylor said: "We are committed to promoting lifelong learning for everyone in Blackburn and Darwen.

"These grants help young people to stay on in education and gain further qualifications after they leave school."

Training sub-committee chairman Simon Danczuk, added: "By giving youngsters this start to their adult life the council is helping them to become equipped with the knowledge and the skills they need to succeed in their chosen careers."
