THE brutal killer of James McParland is being shielded by someone in the area police believe.

Det Supt Bob Denmark, the man leading the murder inquiry, said: "I am still convinced the offender is likely to live locally and I am convinced someone is shielding him for whatever reason.''

He added: "I urge anyone who thinks he may know anything at all to come forward. There is a substantial reward on offer.''

A large team of detectives is still working in the Duke Bar area of Burnley where Mr McParland, known as Seamus, was savagely kicked to death at around midnight on Saturday, April 4.

He had been drinking at the Waggoners public house and St Andrew's Conservative Club in Colne Road.

He left at 11.50pm and was walking home to Briercliffe Road when he met his murderer in St Andrew's Street.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Burnley police on 01282-425001. Information will be treated in the strictest confidence.
