A DISTRICT judge has retired after seven years' service in Blackburn.

Judge Ian Belcher was transferred from the Wigan Group of Courts to Blackburn in 1991.

He attended Manchester Grammar School before qualifying as a solicitor at Manchester University.

District Judge Ian Pickup, who gave a speech at a retirement presentation at Blackburn County Court, said Mr Belcher completed two years national service, but only travelled as far as Leicestershire.

Judge Pickup added that in January 1978, Judge Belcher was appointed registrar of the county court and district registrar of the High Court.
