THE coats of arms of local families have been restored to their place of honour at a Pendle library after customers commented on their sudden disappearance.

The balcony area of Nelson library had been decorated with the plaques for many years but they were removed when wear and tear began to tell.

Library staff Susan Byrne, Sian Booth, Kevin Metcalfe and Joyce Slinger produced a new set of coats of arms painted in acrylic paint which should last for many years.

The plaques bear the names of local families ranging from Ainsworth to Walton and also the names of local parishes and areas.

A booklet which describes each plaque is on sale at the library priced 20p.
