IN AN exact reversal of last weeks fixture St Helens lost the second round match of the Penketh Trophy to Liverpool CC.

Darren Tyms survived a hat-trick ball to top score with a typically pugnacious 61 aided by Phil Roughley (29) in the early stages and by Steve Kenny (16) and Neil Woods (12) at the end of the innings which finished on 1440-9.

The heavy rain which swept the ground in the second innings gave problems to all the St Helens bowlers and the Liverpool batsmen made the most of their good fortune to deservedly win the game on 148-3.

Indian test all rounder Subroto Banerjee, making his debut for St Helens, was the pick of the bowlers with 2-9.

In the second team fixture at Windleshaw Road, St Helens again reversed last week's result with a well earned win. Gary Sheppard (36) shared in an excellent stand of 70 with his brother Alan (16) with David Lowe (26) Roger Burrows (19) and Ian Lawless (19) giving good support in a score of 166 all out.

Liverpool were unlucky to lose a player through injury but facing very tight bowling could only manage 96 all out in 41 overs. Captain Ian Davies (3 for 11) and Gary Sheppard (2 for 5) both off seven overs, made scoring extremely difficult and ensured a fine win.
