Bramwell Speaks Out

ROY Hodgson's pre-season target was to take Rovers into Europe.

That, after stuttering with more conviction than Arkwright in Open All Hours, now looks a likelihood.

But the fact that Rovers were title contenders around Christmas reinforces my belief that there is no need for a knee-jerk summer of frantic spending.

Hodgson has two choices in his quest to turn the acceptable into the exceptional.

He can either smash the existing wage structure and target the very best.

There should be enough cash available but I think that policy spells trouble. Watch Chelsea self-destruct within three years.

Do not forget that Rovers are likely to finish the season with two of, if not THE two, leading Premiership scorers.

There are plenty of superstars already at Ewood.

But the alternative also involves more of a gamble than has been taken this season.

Rovers cannot become obsessed with long-term value for money.

Only one position has sufficient quality in depth - the goalkeeper.

In other areas Rovers must either take a chance with proven players looking for a final pay-out - such as a Mark Hughes or a Dion Dublin - or speculate on unproven talent.

Rovers have been active scouts on the continent throughout the season and it should not be too much to ask to expect a Nicolas Anelka or Christopher Wreh in blue and white halves before too long.
