GLITTERING entertainment is set to spice up the nightlife of Accrington's partygoers as a popular venue undergoes a £1 million facelift.

That's the promise from Mick Cookson, new owner of The Berkley, who has come to town fresh from running award-winning Burnley club Panama Joe's.

Mick is completely revamping The Berkley's function rooms and bars.

It will include a refurbishment of the upstairs conference and banqueting suite.

Sweeping changes will see the room become a major split-level cabaret nightclub, with balconies and a piano bar overlooking the stage.

And a £250,000 American theme bar will be unveiled downstairs, complete with cocktail waiters.

Mick, who worked for entertainment giants First Leisure and Rank before striking out on his own, is hoping to attract over 25s to the cabaret nightclub at the Willow Street venue. He said: "Accrington people need something new and we're hoping to bring a breath of fresh air to the local nightlife.

"It will be upmarket and aimed at mature over 25s and couples who want to have a nice time and enjoy themselves. I can guarantee it will be quality all the way.

"Upstairs, there'll be a new stage and a phenomenal lighting and sound system, with live music from August until Christmas.

"Then after Christmas the room will be ripped out and we're spending a million pounds on turning it into a cabaret club with meals and top bands."

Mick hopes work on the American bar will start in August and be finished in time for Christmas.

Work on the cabaret club will begin in the New Year and is expected to be completed by next summer.
