WILBUR the duck knew what he was doing when he waddled out of Firs Park lake.

At just a few days old the fluffy Muscovy drake couldn't have headed in a better direction - bang on target for lake saviour Rose Jervis's Lakeside home in Leigh.

Roses's son, Wayne, scooped him to safety and the cheeky young Muscovy nestled down in safety with family dog Bruno and the rest of her family.

At the time the "family" included two injured cygnets rescued from the lake and since taken in at animal sanctuaries.

Now Wilbur enjoys nothing better than snuggling up to Bruno and sleeping in an old bob cap!

"I won't be putting him back on the lake which is ruled by Rommel the swan," said Rose, who last year won the Mayor's Citizen of the Month award for her work in promoting and enhancing the park.

The wildlife lover who gets up at 5.30 every morning to feed the waterfowl aims to find him a good home elsewhere.
