THE annual junior music competition at St Hilda's RC High School, Burnley, was one of the best ever with a large number of entries and high standard of performance.

The event was split into six sections with pupils in years 7 and 8 performing on a wide range of instruments.

Winner in the piano section was Hollie Searle with a concerto by Dussek. There were two outstanding performances in the year 7 instrumental section with flautist Clare Doherty just having the edge over cornet player Faith Wilkinson.

Winners of the singing categories were Sarah Cliffe and Amy Tempest. Year 7 keyboard winner was Lorna Green and trumpeter Catherine Riley took the final section. The six finalists took part in a 'penalty shoot-out' won by Clare Doherty by half a point from runners-up Catherine Riley and Sarah Cliffe.

The trophy was presented by school governor Derek Gill whose company, Lupton and Place, sponsored the prizes.
